All men (will|shall) be sailors until the (sea shall free them | sea will set them free)

These appear in the Lyrics of Leonard Cohen’s “Suzzanne”, they also appear partly in the title of this book and in the lyrics of iLiKETRAiNS‘s song “Victress” which tells the story of the lives and deaths of the round the world sailers Donald Crowhurst (who largely faked his solo circumnavigation attempt) and Nigel Tetley (who commited suicide three years after completing the first circumnavigation of the globe in a Trimaran in the same but failed to reach england).

Does the phrase originate elsewhere?
