Log analysers

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

Random question, does anybody have any experience of, or reccomendations for general log analysis tools. Ideally we’re looking for a one-stop-shop for at least http & exim and possibly other things. And we want full log searchability as well as summary reporting probably over the web.

We’ve looked at sawmill which seems pretty good, is there anything else which should be considered?

Freeness is not a necessity, but linux/solaris compatibility probably is.

You can never have enough layers….

I have to connect to a windows DHCP server from java running on a unix box. The set up after about 3 weeks hacking is:

  1. Windows DHCP Server sits somewhere exposing itself using a microsoft internal undocumented RPC interface (presumably DCOM)(microsoft)
  2. Poorly Documented DHCPSAPI.dll library which doesn’t give you any useful error codes talks to DHCP server (remotely) (microsoft)
  3. C# Assembly wraps DLL in something manageable (me)
  4. C# Web service which wraps assembly (me)
  5. Java (autogenerated) web service client talks SOAP to C# Web service
  6. Internal bean actually exposess interface to my code (me)

It works, but i feel slightly delflated. I suspect it would have been easer to get the java stuff to generate an email which got sent to the helpdesk asking then to change the information manually.

Brief Interlude

Technical difficulties prevent me from doing any work, so we present a brief interlude:

  • This is genius (thanks adam)
  • Photos from edinburgh are online
  • I believe in having a balanced diet. For instance last week we balanced vegetable stew ++ with bread and butter pudding —
