Linux Gazette

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

I was randomly looking at sites which link back to mine (I do this every now and then when I’m bored) and I found this article in the linux gazette from April (a publication which i confess i haven’t read for a couple of years).

Anyway in response to the question in the article: no I don’t mind, but it should be pointed out that i was not on my summer vacation and was in fact taking a weekend break from a conference!

We had a discussion in the pub last night and I contested that the hovercraft is the last great British invention, entropyjim recons that VTOL aeroplanes are better, but i’m not convinced.

Given that the conditions are:

  • Must be of british origin (british inventor or invented in britain (concorde doesn’t count))
  • Must be invented after 1952-6 (approx hovercraft invention date)
  • Must be better than a hovercraft
  • *Update* Must be mechanical (http doesn’t count)

Any ideas?

and I went for a swim in the council pool last night and I managed to bash out 50 lengths in about 50 minutes, Thinking about it , this is only 1250 meters at a remarkably unimpressive speed of 0.94 miles an hour, or thinking about it another way just under 1/29th of the width english channel swam at 1/4 of the speed of Grant Hackett’s 1500m world record. Will try and do 60 in the same time on friday…

The hovercraft museum is having a hoverday at the beginning of september.

Why do we describe allegedly infallible things as “fool-proof” surely they should be “clever-people-proof”?

Honeymoon & Wedding Photos

Friday, July 14th, 2006

Right, after a lot of faffing around I’ve managed to get the photos from the wedding (taken by Sarah Huxley Parlour from Photofinish) and our photos from the honeymoon online.
Some intersting facts about Croatia:

  • When outside nunneries, nuns are obliged to ride around on bicycles at all times.
  • The last pope has ridden on every single Jadrolinja ferry.
  • Croatia has more swallows than the sun has atoms of Hydrogen and they are all specially trained to poo on tourists.
  • It is actually illegal in croatia to make hats which fit me.
  • Dubrovnik has more Pizza restaurants than all of italy and america put together.
  • The complaints book is behind the bar.
  • Koalas were invented in Croatia, this is honoured by the fact that this is now the word for “thankyou”.

There are lots of photos, mostly involving people getting married.

We are back, honeymoon was good, may or may not post pictures later .

More importantly I am now back online after possibly longest break from puters for the last 10 years or so (2 weeks).

After a couple of hours of wading through my mail, I’ve come to the conclusion that mail isn’t really working for me any more.. after 15 days I had 1037 mails after spam filtering, 241 of these were announcments, mailing list postings (from mailing lists i don’t already automatically filter), and ‘legitmate mailings’, 795 were spam which wasn’t hit by my filter(s) and 1 the one remaining mail was a question asking for support for some software I wrote two years ago, which I don’t support any more.
