Random number generators for playlists

Wednesday, September 21st, 2005

I am always infuriated when authors of music devices which have playlists do not invest the menial ammount of time required to implement/copy/download/steal a half decent pseudo random number generator.

Today my iAudio has been playing a heady mix almost entirely composed of Radiohead, Loudon Wainwright the third and Django Reinhardt (i guess a total of about 100 out of 5300 songs) while this isn’t in itself bad i get the feeling that in a couple of hours i will subconciously figure out the parameters of the cheapass congruential generator and start being able to predict the next song.

Its tempting to write a perl script to generate “properly random” song choices based on /dev/urandom or something.

Frogs and Plasticine

Monday, September 19th, 2005

According to this, Jamster is owned by Verisign.

Crazy frog, Site finder, says a lot really.

Also Plasticine was invented in Bath (well actually Batheaston) and produced here or over 100 years.

TMS vs Rugrats

Thursday, September 8th, 2005

Has anybody else noticed that thet test match special and rugrats theme tunes are actually the same tune to a slightly different rhythm? I suspect a conspiracy.

Life in Infrared

Wednesday, September 7th, 2005

I got a cheapo (£9) sweex web cam and removed the infrared filter
here are some photos:

Me: (I’m wearing a black t-shirt)

Emma (Shes wearing a black top and purple trousers)

My daruma doll for my ph.D (its normally red and white)

Me in sunglasses (i can hardly see out of them, in IR they are nearly transparent)

Drinkypoos

Monday, September 5th, 2005

What was originally a brief expedition into programming ruby turned into this somewhat lame drinking tracker/calculator. Use it at it or your own peril. (you need a livejournal account or some other openID enabled login).

I suppose if I had lawyers they would tell me to remind you that its not a competition.

Crays

Thursday, September 1st, 2005

A while ago there was a cray up for sale on ebay (you pay shipping, cooling fluid included) and its just been relisted. Despite the coolness of this box, you’d really have to ask yourself why you really needed one, the massive productisation of compute has more or less pushed cray into the speciality market it seems…

Then it came to me…. The only valid reason to buy a cray is so that you can post comments on hardware forums with the following in your tagline:

—-zoot
Cray T3E-1200E: 120 processors 30Gb ram
Laptop: Dell D600
